MONITORING YOUR WATER

Monitoring your water meter Smart Meters Established 2024

Your New Bonita Creek Water Company AMI Smart Meter System

The Bonita Creek Water Company recently changed out all water meters throughout the community.  This is at no cost to you for those who have existing meters. All water meters are now Neptune ProCoder High Resolution Smart Meters.  These Smart Meters send daily meter readings to the pump house gateway.  This allows the water company to save on paying someone monthly to collect this data and much more.

These Smart Meters will allow the water company the ability to monitor all water usage, improve water conservation and provide leak detection.  Having the same type meter for all homes will also help the water company cut down on parts, repairs and allows for meter availability.

FAQ for the AMI Smart System

Bonita Creek Water Company AMI Water Meters

WHAT IS AMI?
Advanced Metering Infrastructure.   This smart metering system is one of the best offered to community water companies who monitor their own water infrastructure.  We have been testing this equipment for over a year.  Our topography and geography have certainly provided us challenges.  We also have a couple of residents that are helping the water company provide repeaters for difficult transmitting areas.  We thank them for allowing us to make this a reality.

AMI vs AMR Meter Systems

WHAT OTHER METERING SYSTEMS ARE THERE?
The two primary systems for small water company community needs are AMI and AMR.  AMR stands for Automatic Meter Reading.  One of the biggest differences with this system is the AMR still requires monthly manual data reading.  The AMI system removes this cost from the water company.

CAN AMI SYSTEMS DETECT WATER LEAKS?
Water conservation is a driving force behind Arizona water shortages. Replacing traditional water meters with data-centric AMI meters can provide customers with round-the-clock readings and alert them to anomalies that may indicate a leak. With Internet access to data in real-time, the water company and its users can see changes in water usage as they happen and also monitor long-term patterns.

Imagine being at work and getting a text or email that there is a leak at your unoccupied home? A quick response to this situation not only saves water but can protect your home from water damage.

Wondering why your water bill shows high usage? Log on to your personalized online portal and see the usage pattern at your home. Perhaps a malfunctioning irrigation timer is turning your sprinklers on daily instead of twice a week. All this information and more is available at your fingertips. There’s no need to wait for a manual monthly meter read to detect abnormalities in usage.

DO AMI SYSTEMS SUPPORT CUSTOMER CONSERVATION EFFORTS?
In addition to state and locally-mandated water use regulations and restrictions, many water-wise customers self-impose their own standards to conserve water. AMI meters make it easy to set personal budgets and conservation goals. In addition, AMI meters allow curious customers to experiment and to see the difference certain actions make in water usage. Want to know exactly how much water your irrigation system uses? Simple! Go online and see your water usage before and after your sprinklers run in the middle of the night.

AMI meters are especially helpful if your goal is stay within a particular water rate tier.  The Bonita Creek Water Company charges are divided into three categories (0-2000 gallons for first tier, 2001 to 5,000 gallons for the second tier and over 5,001 gallons for the third tier), so usage can affect
overall consumption charges.

HOW EFFICIENT ARE AMI SYSTEMS?
AMI meters help customers receive more efficient service quickly. Because customers have full access to their water usage data 24 hours a day, they can become proactive participants and contact BCWC with any water usage concerns as they happen. This eliminates the need to wait for a monthly bill to notice that something is amiss (like excess water use that may indicate a leak).

Additionally, because water usage data is available on a timelier basis, there is less need to send a field service investigator to the site to reread a meter because it’s available 24 hours a day. What’s more, BCWC can view the same water use data daily and discuss any concerns with water patrons.

HOW DOES THE AMI SYSTEM TRANSMIT OUR WATER DATA?
The smart meters have a radio transmitter called the Cereniti DSTx-10.  See photo.  This unit sits inside your water meter box and is battery operated.  The battery life last up to 10 years.  When they reach their lifespan, they will be replaced by the water company.

The radio has an antenna and transmits data via an RF signal or radio frequency.  This data is sent back to the pump house gateway where it is sent out via Starlink to the company data hub.  The company that provides this technology and handles this data is called ABT water management.  ABT has been in water management for over 30 years and has 100s of communities who use these services.
